Tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover first flashed in to the One Jazz musical consciousness last year with her album ” …Plays” and as a member of the all-female Blue Note super-group Artemis. She’s also part of of Christian McBride’s band Ursa Major and a regular player with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra .
Memories, Dreams, Reflections is a less straight-ahead affair than last year’s great album but it’s none less thrilling. Glover and her chord-less trio of Tyrone Allen II on bass and Kayvon Gordon drums straddle the line between the avant-garde and traditional jazz-vocab.
If you need more convincing to check out this rising star then here’s some glowing words from drummer Kenny Washington:
“Nicole Glover is the best tenor saxophonist to come along in a long, long time. Whether it’s hard-hitting bebop, a pretty ballad, some filthy blues or modern, she can do it all. Hawk, Don Byas, Wardell Gray, Hank Mobley, Johnny Griffin and even Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis are all looking down smiling at her.”
