The Rev’d Matthew Askey is an Anglican priest in the Church of England, currently serving as a school chaplain at a Woodard school in the North of England. He previously served as school chaplain at Southwell Minster, Nottinghamshire’s cathedral.
During his time at the Minster, Matthew incorporated both spiritual and liturgical jazz into worship. His musical journey began in childhood with the clarinet, and as a teenager he performed with the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain. He has maintained a lifelong passion for music—particularly spiritual jazz and the saxophone—and in recent years has deepened his engagement with the instrument and the art of jazz improvisation.
Matthew initially trained as a visual artist and continues to work professionally alongside his ministry as a Christian priest. He has curated major exhibitions in churches and cathedrals, organised and contributed to conferences on spirituality and the arts, and served as artist-in-residence at several cathedrals, universities, and for the Society for the Study of Theology. He has also presented solo exhibitions of his paintings and drawings in London and beyond.
For Matthew, both art and music are expressions of prayer.
He joins One Jazz as co-host of The Spiritual Jazz Show.
