Mexican double bassist Ben García and saxophonist Lucas Martínez met by chance outside Barcelona’s El Molino in 2024 — both far from home, both navigating the quiet disorientation of building a life elsewhere. That shared experience became Raíces, a contemporary jazz album where nostalgia and vulnerability sit alongside moments of celebration. García brings the singable melodies of his Mexican childhood; Martínez channels his deep connection to Catalan music and a restless creative impulse shaped by constant movement. With Antonio Sánchez on drums and Marco Mezquida on piano, the six compositions unfold as open routes rather than fixed destinations — from a bus ride between Mexico City and Xalapa (Morriña) to an encounter with a hummingbird in Ajijic (Colibrí) to the closing La Plaza, written in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, as a celebration of home found in human connection. Mixed by Dave Darlington, Raíces invites you to slow down and listen.
