Those of you lucky enough to be at last month’s Jazz In The Round witnessed the joys of Dehli-based tabla master, Gyan Singh. Well, for October’s session we have another South Asian-born percussionist to lead our headline act.

Nepali percussionist Anmol Mohara has just released his debut album “Across The Sea” and it is an absolute gem. It draws on his experiences since moving to the UK in 2015 and was, stunningly, written in his final year as a student at the Guildhall School Of Music. As we’ll no doubt hear in this live set, Anmol’s music combines traditional Nepali instrumentation with jazz and folk melodies. Excitingly, Anmol’s band also features a great vocalist who’s had her own fine album out recently, Tereza Catarov. This should be special!

Kezia Abuoma was the pianist in the quartet that played our Emergence set last month and returns to once again delight in the joys of The Cockpit’s new piano! We had a taste of her Herbie-inspired licks in October so it will be great to see her lead her own band.

In our solo spot we have a revered improviser – Alex Ward. Alex is a virtuoso on both clarinet and acoustic guitar and his roots go back to playing at the legendary Company events organised by the great British guitar maverick Derek Bailey. (Sidebar – if you want an insight in to Bailey have a listen to Stewart Lee’s brilliant edition of Radio 4’s Great Lives which explores Derek’s life and work).

So another diverse and exciting night is in store. The night is introduced by One Jazz’s Chris Phillips and myself Jez Nelson and it’s a Cockpit Production. As ever if you have a great friend then share the love and bring them along. Oh and don’t forget we have a Jazz In The Round special lined up as part of this November’s EFG London Jazz Festival. Seb Rochford will be launching his new band Finding Ways in a special Sunday show on November 23rd.

See you there,
Jez

JAZZ IN THE ROUND is at the forefront of new sounds, offering a performance platform for emerging artists and programming them alongside top-shelf headliners.

JAZZ IN THE ROUND’s flagship in-the-round night is held once a month at The Cockpit in Marylebone, and has become one of the most revered nights in the London Jazz calendar. Each session consists of three sets: An EMERGENCE slot for new and emerging acts, a solo slot – often an artist breaking away from a group to explore something new, and a headline slot playing host to a roster of Jazz’s finest musicians.

In addition, JAZZ IN THE ROUND programs on-your-feet EMERGENCE gigs, one-off nights in pubs, stages at festivals, and shows for the EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL, maintaining an ethos for grassroots platforming, and supporting artists at the start of their career.

Jazz In The Round is a Cockpit Production and a proud partner with One Jazz on their monthly sessions at The Cockpit.
