On Wednesday 23rd September One Jazz celebrates saxophonist John Coltrane, on his 100th birthday.
From 8am until midnight we’ll have dedicated programming, with curated playlists covering the very best of John Coltrane’s music and special programmes from Jez Nelson, Tony Higgins, Marv Kelley, James Hussein Catchpole and Yasiin Bey.
10am – Jez Nelson presents a John Coltrane special edition of Somethin’ Else
12pm – Marv Kelley’s Playground John Coltrane Special
2pm – Tony Higgins reflects on John Coltrane’s impact on Japan in a J Jazz Special
6pm – The Making of A Love Supreme. A superb documentary from 2002 hosted by Yasiin Bey
9pm – James Hussein Catchpole’s Ekaya. James selects his favourite Coltrane deep cuts
11pm – John Coltrane plays My Favorite Things live in Japan. A rare play of a monumental 54 minute workout of the standard from 1966. All of it!
Between these shows, beginning at 8am, will be a curated playlist of Coltrane classics featuring John Coltrane and others interpreting his music.
