Recorded just a few months before his death in May 2025 this live album finds the veteran drummer in fine company with a band of great players whose love and respect for Foster shines through. Chris Potter plays tenor and soprano, Joe Martin bass and Brad Mehldau makes a rare “sideman” appearance on piano. The repertoire includes a sparkling Foster original – Simone’s Dance – alongside music penned by the rest of the group as well as great versions of Coltrane’s Satellite and Wayne Shorter’s E.S.P.
It’s a set of audible joy with a cover photo of a smart-suited Al Foster beaming at the camera. What a guy. A fine final work from a important man in the history of jazz.
This is our Chosen One.
