The Chosen One – Roger Glenn – My Latin Heart (Patois)

Here’s a thing. Roger Glenn played flute for one of the greatest vibraphone stars of all time, Cal Tjader and he played vibes for the legendary flautist Herbie Mann. Stick his name in the dictionary next to Multi-Instrumentalist. Glenn made his recording debut with pianist Mary Lou Williams and contributed to classic albums by Cuban percussion maestro Mongo Santamaria (Mongo´70 ), bebop pioneer and Latin jazz lover Dizzy Gillespie (Bahaina ) and funk/jazz  giant Donald Byrd (Black Byrd ). The producers of Byrd’s huge-selling crossover masterpiece, The Mizell brothers, were also at the desk for Roger’s last album as a leader – 1976’s cult classic Reachin’.

So just fifty years later Glenn is back as a leader and while it seems no single project or recording could possibly capture every facet of this kaleidoscopically creative musician here we find him playing vibes, flute, alto sax, marimba, and also contributing vocals. My Latin Heart showcases his dazzling multi-instrumental prowess via his abiding passion for Latin American rhythms.

It’s a straight on the nose, mainstream latin work out but a joy to the ears. Amongst the highlights are a tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator Cal Tjader called Cal’s Guajira.

And just for kicks here he is playing flute with Cal back in the day …
