Here’s one of those debut albums that feels like a statement for the times. Spanish born trumpet and flugelhorn player Milena Casado and composer has been mentored by the brilliant Terri Lyne Carrington and her strong hand feels present on a release that boasts immediate tunes, bold and innovative sound design and a mind-blowing roster of A-list talent that vouch for the fact that Milena is a future force to reckon with. Kris Davis, Meshell Ndegeocello, Brandee Younger, Kokayi and Carrington all take a turn. Wayne Shorter even appears by way of his distinctive speaking voice.
Reflection of Another Self” is a deeply personal exploration of Casado’s identity, her story of overcoming personal traumas including experiencing racism growing up in Spain and grappling with her dual heritage. Here’s what Milena says of her excellent debut set :
“When I began this album, I had all these expectations: It’s my first album; It needs to express exactly who I am” she says.“But now I see that it’s really just the starting point of a long exploration”.
